Installing default codecs on Windows 2000/XP

1. Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove hardware. A wizard will appear. Click Next on the first page. Click "Yes, I have already connected the hardware" then click Next button, again.

2. Choose Add a new hardware device from the list and click Next. Select "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)", and click Next.

3. Select Sound, video and game controllers in the list and click Next. Select (Standard system devices) in the Manufacturer list and click on the Have Disk... button.

4. Click Browse in the Install From Disk dialog box and navigate to the folder C:\Windows\System32. Select the file mmdriver.inf and click Open then click OK. If you see a warning about logo compatibility, just click "Continue Anyway".

5. Now you should finally see a list of codecs.

Amongst the other items, you should find Microsoft ADPCM Audio Codec and IMA ADPCM Audio Codec. You need to install each codec one by one, so select one of them and click Next. This should re-install the codec. You may get prompts titled "File not found". Point it to C:\Windows\system32. If the file can't be found there either, then you need to locate it on your Windows install CD.

6. Click on Finish.

7. Reboot
